Project Title: Designing for Diversity
Site: Leaf Street, Spyder Park
People: Different cultures of Hulme, elderly and disabled.
Issue: Separation of different cultures, people not as active in the society, No places for the Redbricks to hold cooking events
Cultural Food Pavilion
The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.
It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognising our individual differences. These can be along
the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs,
political beliefs, or other ideologies.
PEOPLE AND ISSUES

What I found out at Hulme was that people in the communities have a strong sense of culture and heritage at the same time there were cases we found strong integration withing cultural heritage was maintained
For many residents the conditions are better than the countries they have arrived from, therefore they are grateful for what they have and do not challenge to try improve the situation
Multi Culturism

Lack of Venue for the Redbricks to hold their cooking events
When i was doing group work we had a look at the red brick, which i a non profit organization in hulme set out to empower the society in cooking and gardening. One of the problems they had mentioned is that sometimes they cant have a cooking event because the lack a venue. With my new project i would want to enable them to host their events in my spaces in order to strengthen the community
Currently in hulme what is happening is people tend to do majority of their shopping in non-local shops. The diagram on the left side shows how that could change and pump in money into their community.
The combination of Gardening, market and restaurant provides a unique opportunity to sell food in its fuel cycle, allowing me to introduce relevant ideas such a s urban farming and sustainable technologies into the narrative of the project.

Waste Managment
I wanted to create Gardening and food market on Leaf Street, in hulme along the busiest roads in that region, Stretford road and Princess Road which is going to bring in a lot of clientele and human traffic.
Designing a restaurant and a market at the same venue will give me an opportunity to tell the story of food in its full cycle. The story begins with how food is grown, and explores its history as a traded commodity. It moves into the culinary experience of preparation, cooking, and consumption, before the final stage of food as organic waste that can be used as fertilizer to complete the cycle. The narrative also introduces contemporary ideas such as urban farming and sustainable technologies.
The scheme will include a two-storey restaurant and an open-air market. The market comprises three elements that combine architecture with agriculture:
The Market Stalls will be clusters of pre-fabricated modular units that can be adapted to meet stall tenants’ needs. The stalls will be are arranged around the arcade with the aim to create small intimate streets like that of an African souk.
The Urban Farm will use a specially developed aquaponic system that will offer fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fish farming for the restaurant. The urban farm also extends into the restaurant.
